The Little Sisters of the Poor are an order of religious women, members of an International Congregation, founded by Jeanne Jugan in 1839. Their charism is a dedication to the service of the elderly. The Little Sisters of the Poor are an international order of 3,500 religious women whose mission is to create a home for the elderly poor in our society, regardless of race or religion.
In addition to the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, the Little Sisters of the Poor take a vow of hospitality. We live this mission of hospitality by serving our elderly poor in every aspect of their lives.
The height of our vocation is to nurture spirituality and assist the dying. The Little Sisters of the Poor instill a respect for human dignity and the inviolability of the human life.
In addition, we provide nutritious food, comfortable housing, clothing, nursing care and meaningful activity. We serve the elderly poor in our homes, welcoming them as family and responding with love to their needs and hopes.
"The Congregation of the Little Sisters of the Poor, an international Institute, was founded in 1839, when Blessed Jeanne Jugan opened her home to Jesus Christ in the person of an elderly, poor, blind woman. Following in her footsteps as we journey into the Third Millennium, we Little Sisters desire that our hospitaller mission of humble service to our elderly brothers and sisters, exercised in the name of the Church, witness to them the compassionate love and mercy of God.... Hospitality to the elderly poor, founding charism of Blessed Jeanne Jugan, remains our inheritance on the eve of the year 2000. We hear her reminding us, ¡®Never forget that the poor are Our Lord.¡¯ In continuing her charism, we share this vision of faith and draw our strength from the charity which the Holy Spirit pours into our hearts....¡± ¡ª Mission Statement, 1996
